English 1: Introduction to English Studies

Introduction to English Studies A (ENGL101) and B (ENGL102) are both stimulating and challenging courses which familiarise students with the diverse discipline of current English Studies. Students are required to engage with a provocative range of literary-cultural texts, including drama, poetry, contemporary African literature and Hollywood film. Students will learn crucial reading skills, along with the ability to think, write and speak critically about the complex relationship between text and world, even where a text challenges their own cultural assumptions.

Texts covered in English 101 include William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Percy Mtwa, Mgongeni Ngema and Barney Simon’s Woza Albert, the film Fight Club and K Sello Duiker’s 13 Cents.

Texts covered in English 102 include a selection of South African and African Short Stories, the poetry of Douglas Livingstone, Ayi Kwei Armah’s The Beautyful Ones are Not Yet Born, the film Dirty Pretty Things and Zakes Mda’s Ways of Dying.

In the first semester, students who intend to MAJOR in English Studies must take ONE of:

ENGL101 (students signing on must already be able to read and write competent English)

Academic Learning in English (ACLE102)

Comparative Literature and Culture (CLTC101)

In the second semester, ENGL102 is compulsory for English majors.
